Foreigner Identity Number (NIE)

Procedure:

The NIE can be applied for directly in Spain or at the consulate of the person's residence.

The request may be made in person or through a duly authorized representative.

The physical presence of the applicant or his representative is always mandatory.

For the processing of Aliens Identity Numbers, an appointment must be made in advance via the online appointment system of the Consulate General of Spain in Amsterdam.

Documentation needed to apply for the NIE at the consulate in Amsterdam:

Standardized application form EX-15 (original and one copy). FILL INSTRUCTIONS EX-15 NIE form.

  • completed and signed by the applicant or his representative The economic, professional or social reasons justifying the NIE application must be stated in the application form.
  • Original of the applicant's valid passport and a copy of the passport's biographical details page. Nationals of Member States of the European Union can identify themselves with their identity document (original and a copy on both sides). Only the certified copy of the document will be provided upon request through a representative.
  • If the NIE is applied for via an authorized representative, the original and a copy of the authorized representative's identity card or passport and sufficient power of attorney expressly stating that he is authorized to submit the NIE application.
  • Dutch passport or, in the case of persons with a different nationality, passport and residence permit.
  • Form 790, code 12 completed and payment of the fee. The consular fee is€ 9,75 and can be paid in cash or by card at a local bank.
Processing and delivery time:

The NIE is assigned by the General Immigration and Borders Commissioner, depending on the Directorate General of Police in Spain. This consulate cannot speed up processing times. The NIE is issued within two weeks on average, but this period can be extended in case of force majeure.

The NIE will be sent to the interested party by email. An email address will be provided in the request for notification purposes.

Important information about the NIE:

The NIE is a personal, unique and exclusive number assigned for identification purposes to foreigners who have ties to Spain because of their economic, professional or social interests.

The NIE processed through the consular offices allows you to carry out procedures with the Spanish government services, but is not valid for residence, nor does it prove that you reside in Spain.

Foreigners wishing to settle in Spain should inform themselves in advance about the need to apply for a visa. Citizens of the European Union must register once in Spain in the Central Immigration Register.

It is necessary to demonstrate why a foreign identity number is being requested.

  • Royal Decree 557/2011, of April 20, approving the regulation of Organic Law 4/2000, on the rights and freedoms of foreigners in Spain and their social integration, after its reform by Organic Law 2/2009.
